International Women’s Day 2010

IWD
March 8th, 2010 marks the 99th International Women’s Day (IWD), which has been observed since the early 1900’s. As a global day, IWD celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday.

If this is the first time you are hearing about International Women’s day, don’t fret as I am a chick and admitadely it took me all these years to find out about it as well. Apparently, International Women’s Day started during a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. I take it because of this a group of women thought there was a need for another day to celebrate.

What that means for you guys…

I guess it’s like Valentine’s Day with a bit more meaning, so go out and celebrate your woman today!

IMD
If you were wondering if there is an International Men’s Day, YES!

International Men’s Day celebrates the contribution men make to those around them, to their family and friends, their work place and the community, the nations and the world. Started November 19th 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago, International Men’s Day is celebrated in Jamaica, Australia, India, Italy, United States, New Zealand, Moldova, Haiti, Singapore, Malta, South Africa, Ghana, Hungary, Canada, China, and the United Kingdom.

Unfortunately, it took 90 years after the first celebration of International Women’s Day before someone thought there should be an International Day for Men, but at least you have another excuse to have a beer and to celebrate!
