We love test-driving vehicles, especially since it provides us with hands-on experience with some truly high-performance cars. Every once and a while, though, we come across something truly surprising – like the time we spent behind the wheel of the Ford Edge.
A giant in the 4×4 market, Ford is one of the undisputed heavyweights of the truck and SUV world. That’s why we were so pleasantly surprised when we picked up the Edge, a compact little crossover – to go back and forth between Miami Shores and Homestead-Miami Speedway for NASCAR’s championship weekend. Talk about a long drive each day, but a pleasantly comfortable ride thanks to the Ford Edge.
Big Fun in a Little Package
Ford is a master of big, burly vehicles – the Explorer, the F-150, and so on – making the relatively compact Edge seem like a minnow in a sea of whales. Yet, we found driving this SUV crossover easily one of the most fun experiences we’ve had in a long time.
This zippy little 5-door comes with a 2.7-liter engine equipped with Ford’s EcoBoost technology, giving it 315 horsepower and an impressive 350 lb.-ft. of torque – enough to bump its towing capacity up to a respectable 3,500 pounds. Cargo space is a respectable 39 cubic feet – expandable up to 73 cubic feet if you fold down the second row of seats – and its intelligent all-wheel drive provides surprising agility on the road in a big way for such a little crossover.

Comfort Within, Style Without
The Ford Edge’s cabin was also a big surprise, providing high levels of comfort. The steering wheel was loaded with controls and laid out in an intelligent manner. Programmable ambient floor lighting offered a range of seven colors to choose from, and a panoramic Vista Roof option made for dazzling sights in the bright Florida sun. The exterior of the Edge was quite eye-catching. Sharply angled and with impressive lines, the Edge’s aggressive styling was reinforced by its wide wheelbase and available 20-inch polished aluminum wheels. Even the standard 19-inch nickel-painted wheels were inspiring on the Edge’s low-slung chassis.

A Proud Little Prowler
The Ford Edge turned out to be a plucky little crossover, loaded with enough power to be a contender without sacrificing style or comfort. Surprisingly fun to drive, the Edge is an attractive choice for anyone who wants a versatile little prowler of a crossover that can do a little bit of everything.
