Dress to Impress: 5 Styling Tips for Men

Many men think it’s a lot of work to be stylish and fashionable. Becoming that stylish guy, who is known to always be impeccably dressed, can be done with some very simple hacks. Some of these are things that all men should know by now, but there might be a few tips that you’ve never thought of before. Below are five styling hacks that any man can use to avoid looking untidy.

Whiten Your Sneakers

White sneakers never stay white for long, but you can get them clean again. First, rinse the shoes with plain water. Next, make a mixture of one part baking soda and one and a half parts laundry detergent. Scrub the shoes with this mixture, let them sit, and rinse them with water. You can put them in the washing machine after that if it’s safe to do so or you can just as easily wash them by hand.

Properly Button Your Jacket

There are different kinds of suit jackets that can be buttoned in different ways. A one-button jacket should be buttoned when you’re standing and unbuttoned when sitting. Leaving it buttoned when sitting stresses the fabric of the jacket and can feel uncomfortable. If you’re wearing a two-button jacket, only button the top button. IF you’re wearing a three-button jacket, you can button the top button if you feel like it. Regardless, always button the second button, and never button the bottom button. For double-breasted jackets, button every button except the bottom one.

Make Sure You Iron Your Shirt

The button-down dress shirt is a staple of any man’s wardrobe, yet many men don’t know how to properly iron these crucial garments. Fortunately, the process is much easier and quicker than you might think. First, have a good ironing board. Any flat surface can do in a pinch, but an ironing board is both heat-resistant and lets the steam from the iron escape from the shirt.

When you iron your shirt, start with the sleeves. They are easier to iron, and sleeves can hang off the side of the ironing board when you iron the rest of your shirt. Open the cuffs when you iron the sleeves. Sprinkle a bit of water onto the sleeves, and press them with your iron. When you iron the rest of the shirt, open the collar and lay it flat just like the cuffs. Finally, wait a few minutes after you’re done to let the shirt cool.

Don’t Over Wash Your Denim

Washing your denim jeans too often degrades the color, so turn them inside out and hang them outside to air out instead. Some people believe they can put their denim in the freezer to keep it fresh, but that won’t deodorize your jeans like airing them out.

Perfect the Art of Stain Removal

When out and about at social settings, be very careful not to spill anything on your clothes. If you happen to spill wine on your shirt, make sure to take the necessary precautions to remove any stains immediately. White wine can dissolve the anthocyanin that gives red wine its color, so it can keep even your whitest shirts from staining if you spill any red wine on them. Just remember to immediately wash your shirt after treating it with white wine in stain-removing detergent to get rid of the last of the stain. You might not have an ugly red stain on your shirt, but people will be able to tell you’ve spilled something on it if you don’t wash it right away.
